Giant Cylindrotheutis Belemnite from Russia

This a giant Belemnite from Russia that is called Cylindrotheutis sp. It's the largest that I've ever seen! It comes from near the town of Mikhailov in the Ryazanskaya Oblast region of Russia (south of Moscow). It is  Jurassic in age (Callovian stage) but I can't find much more info about them.

For perspective, this first specimen is 6.25" (16cm) long and 1" (2.5cm) wide at the open end.

You can see a trace of the Phragmocone left inside the former living area.

  1. That is one mighty belemnite!

Could I ask you to take a look at this specimen I found in a gravel bed a few weeks ago. Fossils are along way from my strongpoint, so is my identification optimistic?

    1. Hi Mark,

It's hard to tell from your photos, and I'm no expert on the geology of England, but it could be from a Belemnite or maybe a worn piece of fossil bone or tooth. You might have better luck taking the piece to a local museum or fossil show and see if someone there can help ID the piece.

      Good luck!
